Bloomberg News: Shootings cost Chicago $2.5 billion a year, or about $2,500 per household, according to Jens Ludwig, director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

Just finished reading the preview version of this Free Comic Book Day comic about Mai by Gene Yang. It’s a good stand alone story that may change how you view the character, now that she is independent and no longer beholden to either Azula or Zuko.

Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday; to pick up your free copy head over to your local comic book store. The Avatar comic will be on the back side of the free Star Wars and Captain Midnight issue and most comic book stores will probably just display the Star Wars cover, so make sure to grab the stack and flip them over to show off Avatar cover! It’s exciting to see that the Avatar franchise is choosing to depict one of the series’ female characters, rather than say, Aang or Zuko.

This is promising. *envies forever*

I will not lie, I’m basically getting off work at 6 am and going to sit outside my local comic book store immediately and just waiting there until they open at 10 because I NEED THIS. IMMEDIATELY.

I’m from Europe, can someone scan this and upload this when it comes out? Would be great!!

Multiple actors and other prominent individuals in the film industry with the last name “Khan” have been detained when entering the country. Irrfan Khan (The Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, Spider-man) described the three times he was stopped—while on the way to receive honors for his roles in films such as The Namesake—as “humiliating.” Actor Aamir Khan was stopped and stripped searched in 2002. Director Kabir Khan, was reportedly detained at least three times in 2008 while filming in the United States. The New York Times ended up remarking on The Dangers of Fying While Khan

This much is clear:

Despite being an incredibly common surname, in the United States, Khan is a racialized last name and those who carry it suffer from additional, insulting, stigma and scrutiny.

There is no shortage of talented actors of South Asian descent whether from within the United States, from the UK, or Bollywood—and many of them even have the last name of Khan.

With Star Trek Into Darkness the name “Khan” is once again stigmatized as antagonistic, but the actors named Khan, the Khans of the world, and those who look like Khans once again have no voice about how they are represented in American media.

If you’re an award winning actor named Khan, you will still get stopped and humiliated at the airport. When that rare character in American media finally shows up sharing your name, he will be played by a white British man. That actor will wear your name for one movie and sneer and strut to great critical acclaim. You will wear your racialized name, your skin color, and hope you don’t get detained another time.

When I first got to Seattle, I took a walk around my new neighbourhood, Greenlake, to get to know the place. And by that I mean I went and found the nearest fro-yo shop. As I was rounding the corner back to my house I saw the most glorious thing sitting on the sidewalk: that cat, right there. That glorious, weird-faced cat. He came right up to me and we had a cuddle and I made sure to take a picture. Mostly because how can you verbally describe that face, am I right?

I went inside and was all, “So, Lauren, there’s this weird looking cat.” And she’s all, “The white shaved one with the face?” And I was all, “YEAH!” That’s how that conversation went. She told me that he hangs around the neighbourhood and is super friendly.

After that, every time I left the house or came home, I was hoping to run into the cat again. When I went out the other day for a walk (read: to get fro-yo), he was across the street chillin’. Maybe a little bit of illin’. (I have no idea what that means.) But this time he had a name tag.

AND IT SAID “MISTER FACE”.

Holy shit. That may be the most perfect name for that cat. I can’t even… Ugh, too good.

Anyway, I think Mister Face should be famous on the Internet. He’s obviously way more fantastic than all those other Internet cats (sorry beloved Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub, but it’s true). The only problem is that I’m afraid of Reddit. And everyone knows Reddit is how cats become famous.

So somebody who is not afraid of Reddit should post some pictures of Mister Face so he can become famous. Then when people are all, “Excuse me, ma’am, could you hold the elevator for me?” I can be all, “Um, I discovered Mister Face. What have you done?” as the door closes in their face.

Macklemore speaks the fuckin truth.

People don’t realize how much of a genius Macklemore really is. The only song they know is Thrift Shop, when there are so many more wonderful songs. He raps about the problems of the world. And that is what makes him an inspiring person.

and even in Thrift Shop he talks about anti-consumerism, people just don’t pay as much attention to detail about it when they think of that song
